Some characteristics of vessels of beech (Fagus silvática L.)

Results of the study of variability in length, diameter and volume part of the vessel elements of stem wood as well as of branch normal and tensioned wood of beech (Fagus silvatica L.) are presented.
Length of the vessel elements in the stem vary 0,152-0,846 mm (X=0,487±0,00423 mm); in normal wood of branches 0,183-0,686 mm (X=0,364±0,00152 mm) and in tension wood 0,164-0,558 mm (X=0,347±0,00154 mm). The vessel elements in the
branch normal and tensioned wood of are shorter than in the stem for 0,123 mm and 0.140 mm respectively.
Diameter of the vessel elements in the stem vary 0,012-0,074 mm (X=0,035±0,000513 mm); in branch normal and tension wood 0,012-0,055 mm (X=0,028±0,00154 mm) and 0,012-0,058 mm (X=0,026±0,000158 mm) respectively. Diameter of the vessel
elements in normal and tensioned wood of branches is smaller than in the stem for 0,007 mm and 0.009 respectively.
Volume part of the vessel elements vary: in stem 19,13-48,12% (X=28,72 ± 0,229%); in branch normal and tensioned wood 16,29-50,26% (X=32,38 ±0,240%) and 17,42-51,16%, (X=29,69 ± 0,241%) respectively. Volume part of the vessel elements in nor-
mal and tensioned wood of branches was larger than in the stem for 3,66% and 2,69 respectively.
