Results of first work on chestnut grafting in Bosnia-Herzegovina realised through collaboration of forest enterprise "Unsko-Sanske šume" Bosanska Krupa, Faculty of Forestry Sarajevo, and Faculty of Forestry Florence (Italy) are presented. One hectare chestnut orchard with 100 seedlings is established in Cazin in spring 2001, with nine well-known cultivares of "Maron" types originating from Italy (Toscana). Plant survival was 50% and some of these cultivares started to fruit in the second years after planting. In addition, grafting has been performed on the chestnut shoots in natural coppices near Cazin in spring 2001 and 2002. In total 709 sprouts were grafted with an average success of 84% (58-100% depending on cultivares). All "Maron" type scions provided Prof. Pietro Piussi, PhD, and his colleagues (Florence).
It is recommended this work to be continued all over the country since it may improve our economy.
