Abstract

Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) in Bosnia-Herzegovina is growing only as a coppices. Chestnut fruits are the secondary products here and there are no selected fruit trees. Largest chestnut sites are on north-west (Cazin), east (Bratunac-Srebreni-
ca) and south (Konjic-Jablanica), but there are many small-scattered patches of this species all over the country. However, chestnut area is decreasing due to the blight and in some places chestnut is replaced with other tree species. Many chestnut stands are degraded due to lack of silvicultural treatment. Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr was first found in the north-west chestnut region, next to Croatia border, in 1961, apparently introduced from this country, but it is present everywhere today. First occurrence of the hypovirulent types of canker was observed in 1980 and eversince severity of the disease is slowing down in north-west and south regions where hypovirulency is wide spread and gradually is increasing (today is present 40-88 %). Unfortunately it does not exist yet in other chestnut regions.
