Abstract

Intra- and interpopulation variability of cotyledon number of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.), was studied in five population in Central Bosnia (Fojnica, Kakanj, Igman, Crepoljsko, Olovo). Total of 4.260 plants were tested. Statistically significant intrapopulational variability on the level of 1% and 5% was found in all studied populations. However, interpopulational variability was not found.

Regarding the number of cotyledons per seedlings those 5 cotyledons were dominant in four populations, and with 6 cotyledons in one population.

This characteristics can not be used in differentiation of species into lower taxonomic units.
