Abstract

In this book method of the Second Forest Inventory on large areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina is presented. Planed period of implementation is form 2006 until the end of 2009. First State Forest Inventory in Bosnia and Herzegovina was realized about 40 years ago in 1964 -1968 years. For the difference than first forest inventory, this inventory has some extended goals. Second inventory was projected as first step of continual and permanent forest recourses inventory. The general goal of the

Second State Forest Inventory (SFI) is to record the current state and recent development of the forests and forest lands, in a representative and reproducible manner, using various forests data sources.

Realisation of this inventory was splitted in two phasess. Phase 1, which task was methodology testing in north-west part of BiH (2006 year), and Phase 2 which should cover all other forest and forest land in BiH.Phase 2 should be completed in 2009.

This book consists of five parts, and annexes.

In the first part, goals and tasks of this inventory was described. Object of inventory, information needs, spatial and classification units of forest and forest lands, which by collected data should be presented, definitions and criteria of the classification. In the second part, concept of the sample was described. A stratified systematic random sampling method with a two-step distribution of sample units was chosen as the optimal model for the terrestrial survey. Sample units (tract) consist of 4 sample plots in square shape 200 x 200 m.

Based od existing forest data, all forest and forest land was divided into 2 strata:

- strata 1: high forests – state ownership, network of tracts 2 x 2 km;

- strata 2: all other forests and forest lands, network of tracts 4 x 4 km.

I the third and forth part, procedures of preparatory work and procedures of terestrial survey was described in details. This part consist definitions of data, explanation of recording and measurments. Explanations and procedures of recoring and measurnments are splited on themathic parts, about tract data (area), forest stand (land) data, data about young growth and different damages, dead wood and trees, folowing rules of survey. Fifth part of this book consists explanations, and formulas for data calculations, sorting of informations and their presenting. The data were stored in a relational database application, developed specifically for this purpose.
