Adaptation and distribution of european beaver (Castor fiber L.), after re- introduction in Semešnica river

The re-introduction of beavers in Bosnia-Herzegovina have started in 2004. The Semešnica River, a tributary of the Vrbas River was chosen as the first locality for re-introduction. The re-introduction was completed on April 13, 2005 when a total of 20 beavers were released.
Before the release, all the beavers were marked with microchips for easier monitoring and registration of losses.
After the re-introduction, the monitoring of the beavers was conducted in co-operation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Forestry and the Hunting Associaton Semešnica from Donji Vakuf. The majority of the re-introduced beavers adapted well in the chosen locality, and within a month after the re-introduction, we noticed territorial distribution between families along the Semešnica River. The largest distance from the release site in Semešnica is 6, 5 kilometers. One pair of beavers entered the Vrbas River, passed the entire urban area of Donji Vakuf and settled at Bajrin Tuk locality. These beavers migrated 12 kilometers away from the releasing site. In the course of 2005 there were no registered losses in the re-introduced population.
